Just watch your energy. Just stay calm. Your dog knows if you’re nervous. Your energy transfers down the leash. I know, I know… the things dog trainers say to try to help you! The simple fact is having a reactive dog is stressful! There’s lots of big feelings going on from embarrassment to shame in our end. For your dog, their feelings could be coming from fear or frustration. Behaviors that are rehearsed often become quite strong. We can’t just turn them off like a switch. The best thing you can do is to learn how to support your dog and give it clear information and then practice successful repetitions so you can build confidence! It doesn’t happen overnight. Practice the leash skills. It takes time to build muscle memory. When you become more confident through practice, your dog will in fact settle into your guidance. Need support?
