Nature’s neighborhood watch in action!
A Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was spotted mobbing a massive Great Horned Owl at the Indiangrass Preserve.
What is bird mobbing? It’s a clever survival tactic where smaller birds harass a much larger predator. By making a massive ruckus and swooping down, they accomplish two things:
- Alert the entire neighborhood that a danger is nearby.
- Completely disrupt the predator’s ability to hunt in peace.
If you’ve ever wondered why the big owl doesn’t just turn around and sn**ch them out of the air — it all comes down to agility. The flycatcher is incredibly fast and nimble, making it almost impossible for the bulkier owl to catch it mid-air.
