Cheryl Browne, was the first African-American contestant For 1971's Miss America Pageant. The year was 1971, and the world was changing. In the midst of the civil rights movement, Cheryl Browne made history as the first African-American woman to compete for the title of Miss America. The pageant had long been criticized for its lack of diversity, but Cheryl's beauty, poise, and talent couldn't be ignored. She won the Miss Iowa title in 1970 and went on to become a for black women across the country.
