Federal versus state responsibility for education is shifting. Last week, the governors of Maryland and Wyoming urged state and local educators to work with their communities to improve student engagement, and described their states' initiatives to boost student outcomes.

I started leading a PD session for my schools on how to pronounce or EL and former EL students' names, after I kept noticing it happening. Every adult in one middle school mispronounced my student, Rogelio's name, and even after I taught them in the doorway, they kept saying it wrong.
When I asked him how it made him feel, he just shrugged and looked at his feet. Ugh. Stab me in the heart.
I also had to go through my own learning curve with student names whose linguistic background I didn't know.
