Anne Truran from Together, Language shares: "Do you have any colleagues who you hear mispronouncing your students' names?
I started leading a PD session for my schools on how to pronounce or EL and former EL students' names, after I kept noticing it happening. Every adult in one middle school mispronounced my student, Rogelio's name, and even after I taught them in the doorway, they kept saying it wrong.
When I asked him how it made him feel, he just shrugged and looked at his feet. Ugh. Stab me in the heart.
I also had to go through my own learning curve with student names whose linguistic background I didn't know.
I now lead a free virtual session, open to all educators. If you'd like to share it with a colleague, please do so!" Link to register is here: https://togetherlanguage.kit.com/names

"We Are Storytellers" combines hands-on activities with great picture books — such as How the Raven Stole the Sun and Martina the Beautiful Cockroach — inspiring kids to read and learn about stories from diverse backgrounds and cultures. It gives kids a chance to learn about oral and written storytelling, and the thrill of creating a never-before-told story. Download the free PDF guide and find videos:
