A FRIEND'S FAVOR
Prologue: James's Dual Life
James Miller lived a divided life. During the day, he wore his corporate accountant suit and acted steady and decisive, the kind of man people trusted with their money. But at night, the suit felt like a disguise. He wandered his quiet house, each room feeling empty, his wife more like a stranger than a partner. Even when she was there, he drifted through the hours, restless and weighed down by everything left unsaid.
James and Emily's marriage used to be full of late-night talks, laughter, and shared dreams. Five years later, that warmth had faded. Now, they moved through life like strangers who knew the steps, sharing a home and a bed but little else.
James found his real escape in an apartment Emily didn't know about—a secret place in downtown LA, full of glass and sunlight, modern and quiet. This private space was his refuge from insecurity, a place where he could breathe.
But lately, even this place felt less safe, as if shadows of doubt crept in, making the sense of security fade.
The Glow Under the Door
Rain pounded the windshield as James drove through the narrow downtown streets of Los Angeles. It was almost midnight. He'd told Emily he'd left the client contract for tomorrow's presentation at the office.
"It needs to be signed and scanned by morning, or we risk losing the deal," he'd said over dinner, not meeting her eyes. "I also need to clean up some figures and finalize the pitch. I probably won't be done before three or four. It doesn't make sense to drive back that late, so I'll crash at the office. I've got clothes there."
He always found a reason to go, drawn to his apartment—a secret refuge Emily didn't know about—that helped him breathe after arguments or long days at work.
