Here are the top five things not to do when maintaining your log home.
1. Painting your log home: The #1 the worst thing on my list! House paint traps moisture, and peels off in sheets. Use only breathable, log-specific stains or sealants—anything else voids warranties and ruins the wood.
2. Pressure washing: Don’t pressure wash with too high PSI (keep it under 500), don’t use narrow nozzles, and don’t soak seams or chinking. If the finish is old or thin, skip it—soft brush and low-pressure hose is safer. The wrong pressure damages log surfaces.
3. Ignoring cracks or gaps in chinking: Small openings let water, bugs, and mold sneak in. Once rot starts, it’s invisible until the wall sags. Check and reseal every year—don’t wait for leaks.
4. Planting trees or shrubs too close: Anything touching the logs holds dampness, blocks air, and draws pests. Keep 18-24 inches clearance. It’s a slow killer for lower logs and foundations.
5. Skipping annual inspections: “It looks fine” is how most big problems start. Hidden rot, insect tunnels, or failing seals won’t show until it’s expensive. Walk the exterior once a year—or get a pro like us to spot what you miss.
Follow these, and you’ll avoid the headaches we fix daily.
