The two-sided statue of Mephistopheles and Margaretta, carved from a single sycamore log by an unknown French sculptor in the 19th century, draws from Goethe’s 1808 play Faust. It embodies the tale where scholar Faust pacts with demon Mephistopheles for earthly pleasures, leading to the seduction of innocent Margaretta (Gretchen).
Acquired in 1876 by Salar Jung I during travels in France, the sculpture entered his collection and later became a highlight at Hyderabad’s Salar Jung Museum after 1951. Displayed with a mirror to reveal both evil’s arrogance and good’s timidity, it symbolizes humanity’s dual nature.
