The number of films released by major studios grew from 563 in 2012 to well over 800 in 2019, while the number of indie films released stayed the same at around 140 per year.

The entire film industry cut back or delayed releases during the pandemic, with studios only releasing 291 films in 2020.

As the strikes in Hollywood have severely interrupted productions, film releases will likely be delayed, meaning less films will be released over the next few years.
