Singing well is science paired with athleticism.

(Insert confused expression here)

Many great people genuinely believe singing is just something you do. And when told that there is a lot of science involved, I am often met with honest confusion. So here's just a small list of ways singing requires scientific understanding and athletic training:

Athletic demands:
Muscular accuracy, endurance, respiratory and core strength, control of intercostal muscles, vocal agility, precision, and coordination requiring regular training, warm ups, cool downs, and proper technique to prevent injury (especially when singing vocally demanding music)

Acoustic science: pitch frequencies, formant, resonance, vowel frequencies and modifications.

Biological science: 100+ muscles including core, intercostal, and pelvic floor muscles, subglottal pressure, complex laryngeal functions, threshold pressures, supraglottal pressure and so much more.

This is a quick glance at just a few of the many physiological and scientific demands required to sing well. Sure....there's a lot to unwrap here... but a good teacher will guide you through exercises and present information in a way you can understand so that you can smoothly and gradually develop your vocal athleticism.
