Happy Haitian Independence Day and Happy New Year!

To my fellow Haitians, today we celebrate not just a new year but a powerful legacy of freedom, resilience, and unity. January 1st is more than just the first day of the year, it is a reminder of our ancestors’ bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering fight for independence. It is the day Haiti became the first Black republic in the world and the first nation to abolish slavery, paving the way for hope and inspiration across the globe.

On this special day, we gather with our loved ones to eat Soup Joumou.
But why Soup Joumou?
Because it carries the story of our freedom. During the days of colonization, this delicious soup, rich with pumpkin, vegetables, and meat, was a delicacy reserved only for the oppressors. Enslaved Africans were forbidden to eat it. But on January 1, 1804, when Haiti declared its independence, our ancestors reclaimed that soup as a symbol of their liberation.

Every spoonful is a celebration of triumph. Every ingredient tells a story of perseverance and victory. When we eat Soup Joumou, we honor their courage and declare to the world that freedom is our inheritance and our pride.

As we enjoy this sacred tradition today, let us remember the strength of our ancestors and carry their resilience into the new year. Let’s remind ourselves that we are a people born from struggle but destined for greatness.

To all my Haitian brothers and sisters, I wish you a joyous Independence Day filled with pride and unity. And to everyone, I wish you a Happy New Year! May 2025 bring you peace, success, and endless blessings.

Let’s honor the past, celebrate the present, and keep striving for a brighter future.
Viv Ayiti! Nou se pitit libète!

With love and gratitude,
Faubert Maleb
