It was great to connect with ENR’s Bryan Gottlieb this week to discuss the challenges of adaptive reuse projects.

The issue took center stage when the former Pfizer HQ, which is being converted to multifamily, buckled in New York City, forcing an emergency evacuation of the property.

Though we are not a structural firm, Shumate nevertheless works on many office-to-apartment conversions, and each one requires unique MEP considerations, ranging from the durability of floor plates and elevator shafts to ensuring enough natural light and MEP functionality.

As demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow, conversations around data centers and resource usage are becoming increasingly important.

In a recent article, Daren Shumate highlighted how modern data center design is evolving to address concerns surrounding water and energy consumption.

“Data centers are a convenient scapegoat when it comes to issues concerning water and power,” said Shumate. “Many of the newer centers are now relying on air-cooled chillers or refrigeration as opposed to evaporative water systems and cooling towers. Those designs call for very low water usage.”

As AI adoption accelerates, the industry continues advancing more sustainable and efficient technologies that support both innovation and responsible resource management.
