Friday Fixin’s

Good morning, Bascom family and followers. I hope that you are having a great week so far. Our grandson is going to spend the next few weeks with us, and we are planning on having a great time with him. This morning as I was drinking that first cup of coffee, I had walked outside to watch my yard rabbits doing their thing. I was thinking of the next few weeks and how busy we are going to be. I must admit that I had the passing thought of regret that there was so much of his life that we have missed. It was just a “passing” thought. We are so grateful for the moments that we are blessed with when we do get to see our grandkids.

It is those moments in time that we cherish. Because the greatest moments in life rarely announce themselves when they arrive. They rarely appear as milestones or come with a big event or feel important in the moment.

They often look like a conversation you almost skipped. A walk you almost didn’t take, a call you almost didn’t answer, a dinner you almost canceled.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that success has far less to do with achievement and far more to do with availability.

It might be the most underrated aspect of life, in fact. Having the realization to be present to the people we love, the opportunities before us, the ordinary moments that become our most treasured memories.

This is one of my greatest challenges. If you are like me, you find that life is filled with moments of getting the next thing done. Planning for accomplishments tomorrow. This is often how we approach our relationship with God.

So, here’s my challenge for you:
Before this day ends, say yes to one thing you would normally rush past. Sit a little longer. Take the walk. Make the call. Ask the question. Stay for one more story. Open God’s word and take to heart what it speaks to you. Be available to receive God’s grace for your life.

Because years from now, you won’t remember any of the emails you answered, the errands you completed, or the meetings you attended.

But you will remember the conversation you almost missed, and the opportunities to give God the glory you rushed past.
