LONG POST!!!
My latest album was written and produced quickly because I had some things on my heart that I needed to say. So I enlisted Mike McClain to help me produce. However, as a producer myself, it’s my album Colfax 1985 that I’m most proud of. I played almost every note of that album except steel guitar and banjo. I also agonized for months over each and every song, taking it years to complete. Creatively, it was my most diverse album, with plenty of twang but a fair amount of weird (my favorite!).
The main song, “Colfax 85” has a ton of Easter eggs in it. The intro to that song was originally intended to be its own track entitled “Morning In Colfax.” In that short piece, which is better enjoyed with a good set of headphones, includes the cricket singing, the “stupid rooster” crowing, a dog barking and someone turning on the radio and scanning stations…where they hear a bit of my two highest performing radio songs, “Van Zandt County Line” and “Summer Days” before landing on “Colfax 85” as it starts.
The song itself is a snapshot song (my word for it) meant to paint pictures of different events in Colfax in 1985. The same type of song as “Summer Days” and the new “Two Heartbeats” it’s a song that paints little pictures that are tied together by the theme. The little picture are…
1st verse: As the burning barrel begins to burn the trash, our stupid rooster is discovered nearly dead in front of an old mirror in the barn after fighting his own reflection for hours!!
2nd verse: Mr. and Mrs. Morris, the kind old man and woman across the street from us had a son when we first met then. Memories are hazy. He was often seen on the company of his girlfriend. But one day, an ambulance sat with its light flashing in their yard. Years later, Mr. Morris showed us the sweet gum tree where Alford had carved a heart with her name inside. The same tree where he died. The song says it better.
3rd verse: My little sister, Angela was a magnet for copperhead snakes. They were always trying to get a bite of her at one point or another. One day on a hunting hike through the woods with her daddy (my dad, too, obviously) she almost stepped straight onto yet another copperhead. And again, if hazy old memories serve correctly, he swooped her up and beheaded that thing with a gun right before it could send Angela to the hospital.
The music on this song was a choppy beat with some organ and spooky steel guitar playing off of each other. This was one of the last songs David Mitchell recorded with me before retiring and handing over the reigns to someone else. He capture the feel perfectly. David always understood my music. He has a little fun during the “Copperhead Scene” with some notes you probably don’t often hear from a steel guitar!
Anyway, put on your headphones and give Colfax 85. A fresh listen to enjoy all the subtle little treats I put in there for you to hear. Thanks for listening!!
