From throne to exile and back into the debate.

Iran was ruled by kings for over 2,500 years. The Pahlavi dynasty (1925–1979) was the last.
In 1979, the monarchy collapsed during the Islamic Revolution. The Shah left. His son, Reza Pahlavi, was 18 years old when he went into exile — never crowned, never ruling.

Today, decades later, he positions himself not as a king, but as a secular, transitional figure calling for:
• separation of religion and state
• free elections and a referendum
• a return to Iran’s historical identity without theocracy

Support is strongest in the diaspora and visible inside Iran, though hard to measure under repression. Critics point to the authoritarian legacy of the past; supporters argue the question now is not monarchy vs. republic — but theocracy vs. choice.

Iran’s future is no longer about nostalgia.
It’s about who decides next.
