As Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month draws to a close, we want to take a moment to celebrate — because celebration matters.

Every single day, the people we serve at Gatesway are working toward goals that are meaningful to them. Some are big milestones. Some are quiet, personal victories that only they and their support team fully understand. All of them deserve to be recognized.

This month, our Friends have:

**Why Relationships Matter:** Friendships provide emotional support, social connection, opportunities to give and receive care, shared experiences, and community belonging.

**The Challenge:** Adults with I/DD often face social isolation due to limited transportation, inaccessible spaces, and societal attitudes.

**What We Do:** At Gatesway, we create opportunities through community outings, social events, supported friendships, and community integration.

**Your Role:** Include people with I/DD in social activities and events, be a genuine friend, see the whole person, create accessible opportunities.

🌟 **Right to Live in Community** - Olmstead affirms community-based services
🌟 **Right to Accessible Education** - IDEA ensures appropriate education
🌟 **Right to Accessible Spaces** - ADA requires accessibility
🌟 **Right to Be Free from Abuse** - Safety and dignity
🌟 **Right to Privacy** - Same privacy rights as everyone
🌟 **Right to Vote** - Participate in democracy with supports if needed.

Tips for accessibility:

🌟 **Provide Accommodations** - Ask what people need
🌟 **Create Sensory-Friendly Environments** - Consider lighting, noise
🌟 **Be Patient & Flexible** - Allow extra processing time
🌟 **Include People in Planning** - "Nothing about us without us!"
🌟 **Train Your Staff** - Disability etiquette, person-first language
🌟 **Make Materials Accessible** - Large print, simple language, pictures.

Let's talk about I/DD diversity! 🧩💙

'I/DD' is an umbrella term including many diagnoses:
🌟 **Autism Spectrum Disorder** - Affects communication, social interaction, behavior
🌟 **Down Syndrome** - Genetic condition affecting learning
🌟 **Cerebral Palsy** - Affects movement and posture
🌟 **Fragile X Syndrome** - Genetic condition causing intellectual disability
🌟 **Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders** - Caused by prenatal alcohol exposure
🌟 **Other Conditions** - Many others fall under I/DD.

**What's Important:** Every person is unique! The diagnosis doesn't define the person—their strengths, interests, personality, and dreams do. We see the person first, always. 💙
