Alaska beats me down with its cold
and yet, I know of the gold, and I stay
sleeping in sewer culverts for the warmth
sifting through the dumpsters for edibles
even soggy vegetables
and I am so cold
cold in my mind, cold in my heart
cold in my will to live

Gold to go home on
where is it to find

Home thoughts bother me tonight
successes I sought with determined resolve
dissolve with the numbness of my toes and hands
a frozen cat yields to my clawing fingers
to survive

One more day is all I think I can take
before it takes me
the cat I ate and vomited
is eating away my mind now
and home is simply here
quitting
gold or no
just too much cold
