Celebrate Black History Month by learning a little about Tucson’s history in our augmented reality exhibit, “Discovering Community in the Borderlands.” One of the featured stories is about the Dunbar School.

The Dunbar School came into existence in 1912 as a state mandated, segregated school for African American students only. The then African American majority neighborhood named it the Paul Laurence Dunbar School. Now called the Dunbar Pavilion: An African American Art & Culture Center, it is governed by the Dunbar Coalition, which has stewarded the campus' revival. The Coalition is working to convert it into a space that exhibits the contributions of African-Americans to the development of Southern Arizona, and serves as an anchor for and home to programs and organizations that support education, arts, social justice, health, economic well-being, and civic engagement in an effort to reverse the effects of segregation throughout the region.
