This Day In Foodie History Aug 28 1965 1st Subway sandwich shop opens in Bridgeport, Connecticut
The origins of Subway: When the original “Pete’s Super Submarines” (1965) was renamed “Pete’s Subway,” 1968.
The first Subway sandwich restaurant was founded in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1965 by Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck.
DeLuca, who was just 17 at the time, borrowed $1,000 from family friend Buck to start a sandwich shop to help pay for his college tuition. Originally called “Pete’s Super Submarines,” they sell 312 sandwiches the first day. The average cost of a sub was between 49 cents and 69 cents.
By 1974, they had 16 shops in Connecticut and began franchising, rebranding to the more familiar "Subway" name.
The concept of the submarine sandwich itself was inspired by DeLuca's frustration with the high cost of tuition and living expenses. He sought to create a fast, affordable, and healthy alternative to traditional fast food.
The idea of a customizable sandwich appealed to many, and the ability to "eat fresh" with a variety of ingredients set Subway apart from competitors.
This approach to fast food laid the foundation for what would become one of the largest and most successful restaurant chains globally, known for its ubiquitous $5 footlongs and a unique model that allowed customers to choose their ingredients, leading to Subway's enduring popularity.
