Ensemble Congeros

Eddie Ade Knowles is one of seven 2021 Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Hall of Fame inductees being honored Oct. 27 at Universal Preservation Hall.

Knowles was a pillar of African and Caribbean music in the Capital Region from when he joined Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1977 until his death in 2020; there he held positions as Dean of Students, Vice President for Student Life and Professor of Practice in the Arts and Humanities. An accomplished musician with 50 years of performance, residency, workshop and recording credits as a percussionist, his artistic focus was on African, Afro-Cuban, and New World music and dance. He served many years as board officer and chair of the music program of Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. In 2004, he founded Ensemble Congeros, a group dedicated to the study and performance of Afro-Cuban, African and New World percussion.

It is with heavy heart that the Ensemble Congeros family must share the news of the passing of our leader, our mentor...our dear friend...Eddie Ade Knowles.

We love you and will miss you tremendously. Thank you for all that you taught us, at the drum and in life. We promise to honor your spirit by continuing to chase the rhythms...ASHÉ !!!!!

It was a great pleasure playing among hundreds of bright eyes at Giffen Memorial Elementary School last week. Leah Penniman danced spirit, these kids charged us up!! Our next performance is TONIGHT at Music To My Hair - 7pm. Everyone is welcome.
