ATTIC CLASSIC: Arlene Fontana was a singer, actress, and nightclub performer whose entertainment career spanned more than four decades across television, theater, and popular music. Born in 1936 in Amsterdam to a musician father with ties to radio station WCSS in the Mohawk Valley, and a mother that encouraged her early artistic training, by age ten Arlene was studying piano and dance, and quickly became a familiar face in local entertainment.

As a teen, she appeared on WRGB-TV's Teenage Barn, worked in radio theater, and performed throughout the region. After graduating high school in 1954, a contract offer to perform in nightclubs had her moving with her family to Miami, launching a professional singing career. She soon toured nationally and performed in pre-Castro Cuba, gaining a reputation as a polished vocalist with an engaging stage presence.

In the late 1950s, she recorded a 45 featuring the songs "Easy" and "I’m In Love." The record found unexpected success in England, leading to club engagements in London and expanding her international profile.

Arlene went on to appear on major television programs, including The Ed Sullivan Show, and as an actor in soap operas. Her theatrical career was equally significant; she performed nearly 2,000 times as Linda Low in national touring productions of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical 'Flower Drum Song.' Despite a breast cancer diagnosis in 1984, Arlene remained active until shortly before her death in 1990, leaving behind a legacy as one of Amsterdam's most accomplished performers.

For the Attic Classic, we'll go back to her late 50's single for "I'm In Love."
