The modern flag has evolved to include 50 stars for each state, while retaining the 13 stripes for the original colonies. Officially, the colors carry specific meanings:

Red: Hardiness and valor
White: Purity and innocence
Blue: Vigilance, perseverance, and justice

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the national flag would have 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a blue field to represent a “new constellation”.

The Proclamations:
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14th as the official date.

In 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress to permanently secure it as National Flag Day.

Dual Celebration:
June 14th is also celebrated as the birthday of the U.S. Army, which was established two years prior to the flag, on June 14, 1775.
