Hybrid Robotics
Yesterday afternoon, our team assisted the Marquette Police Department in locating Trenton Massey in the Lower Harbor after a two-month search. Our thoughts are with the Massey family, and our deepest thanks to MPD, the Marquette County Sheriff's Office dive team, and the many agencies and volunteers who never stopped looking.
Searches like this are extraordinarily difficult. Cold water, low visibility, debris, and large search areas push the limits of what divers and traditional sonar can do. Modern imaging sonar mounted on a capable ROV — like our SARbot platform — lets a small team cover ground efficiently, identify targets in conditions where eyes-on simply isn't possible, and direct dive teams precisely to a location rather than searching blind. It doesn't replace the people doing this work; it makes their work safer and more likely to succeed.
A special shout-out to the City of Marquette, who provided a capable vessel and a skilled captain to operate from. Working off the right boat with the right person at the helm makes all the difference in an operation like this, and we're grateful for the support.
A few more specific thank-yous from our side:
- Brian Abbott, a sonar expert and longtime mentor to our team — he was on board helping our team identify targets and conduct the search.
- Jessica Danault and Kongsberg, who loaned us the Flexview sonar currently mounted on our demo SARbot. That's the unit that located Trenton.
We're grateful we could contribute, and grateful to everyone who showed up over the past two months.
As multi-agency teams continue to enhance water rescue readiness, like the recent training on Lake Norman (North Carolina) involving 80 first responders, the role of technology in these operations is more critical than ever.
Limited visibility, time constraints, and diver safety remain key challenges in underwater search.
The SARbot ROV is designed to support these missions by:
• Providing real-time underwater visibility
• Reducing risk to dive teams and personnel
• Accelerating search and recovery operations
As global operations expand and environments become more complex, integrating ROV technology is no longer optional, it’s essential.

Connection details matter.
Thruster termination options play a key role in compatibility, reliability, and ease of integration across different underwater systems. Making flexibility at the connection level an important part of system design.
