Four years ago, a Tomball resident was so impressed with the Christmas spirit of Beckendorf Junior High School students working on their โAdopt a Familyโ project that he asked to donate a substantial amount of money to the program.
This year, as he has every year since, William Sumner, owner of the Houston Poly Bag Corp, is contributing $10,000 to help support the 35 families assisted by the 36 third period classes at the school.
The junior highโs program started through the sponsorship of the student council five years ago, with each class supporting one family. Information was given to each class concerning their needs during the Christmas season, and students and staff brought items such as food stuffs, toys, appliances and bicycles.
The student council then supplemented the food stuffs with a $15 gift certificate for the main meat dish. The teacher and several students in the class delivered the items to the families.
Sumner, who had a daughter in junior high school at the time, asked to participate because of the way the program was handled and because he felt the program helped his daughter and other students experience the true meaning of Christmas by caring for someone less fortunate.
Sumnerโs donation enabled the junior high to give each family a $107 gift certificate to buy food at Kleinโs Grocery Store and a $100 gift certificate to buy clothing at Weinerโs.
