Forest Spotlight!

For the last 3 months we have been conducting an improvement thinning at Weatherlow Farms on S***m Road in Westport.
In 2015 I helped Ryan Wagner develop a Forest Stewardship Plan for his farm. This plan mapped and delineated forests stands, fields and wetlands, woods roads and stonewalls. The plan outlined a long-term forest management goal of “managing for ‘old-growth’ or late-successional forest characteristics”. The recently competed thinning removed poorly formed, dying and dead trees, in order to create growing space for the healthiest trees and open regeneration gaps to encourage the regeneration of new trees. Repeating this light thinning 2-3 times over the next 30-40 years will maintain a healthy and maturing forest while increasing both structural and biological diversity throughout the forest.
