Despite an increase in 47,000 layoffs by contractors in May over April, the number of open construction jobs increased by 76,000 compared to May of 2025. According to Macrina Wilkins, Director of Market Insights for the Associated General Contractors of America, “The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) data for May indicate that contractors continue to take a cautious approach to hiring while working hard to retain their existing workforce.” A report published by Construction Drive further noted that while the number of open jobs increased to the highest level of 2026 so far, the pace at which contractors are hiring and laying off construction workers could indicate wavering demand outside of the data center boom, as well as a desire for companies to hang onto existing employees.
Trench Safety Stand Down week is underway!
