Most blind spots are self inflicted. If your side mirrors show a lot of your own car, you are wasting mirror space on something you already know is there.

Set your mirrors outward. In the left mirror, you should barely see the side of your vehicle. Same on the right. The goal is overlap, not duplication. Your rearview mirror handles what is behind you. Side mirrors should show what is coming up alongside you, especially cyclists and fast movers in city lanes.

This single adjustment reduces the “surprise car” problem during lane changes and merges on roads like the Bruckner and the Cross Bronx. It also makes you less dependent on last second shoulder checks in heavy traffic.
