Using medium density fiberboard (MDF) for millwork and painted cabinetry is a fine choice, as it is more stable than solid wood and stands up to heat and humidity better too. Indeed, unlike solid wood which expands both vertically and horizontally, MDF remains stable and requires less maintenance as a result.

When buying rough-cut cypress lumber, look for straight and flat rough boards. Bowed, warped, and/or twisted rough boards are much harder to machine. In addition, these qualities in a board can be indicative that the wood is unstable.
