Two Medicare “Lanes” People Confuse

Most people don’t realize Medicare forces you to pick a lane

When you first get Medicare, you’re not just “signing up for a card.” You’re choosing a lane that shapes your costs and freedom for years.

Lane 1: Original Medicare (Parts A & B) plus a Medicare Supplement (Medigap). This combo lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare nationwide and uses the Supplement to cover many of the gaps Original Medicare leaves behind.

Lane 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C). This is an all‑in‑one plan that routes your Medicare through a private company, often bundling drug coverage and extras like dental, vision, and hearing in one card, but typically with networks, referrals, and prior authorizations.

You can’t have both lanes at the same time. Medigap is designed to work with Original Medicare, not to wipe out the copays and rules inside an Advantage plan.
