This Black History Month, we honour one of the African-American pioneers in healthcare - Dr Charles Richard Drew, a physician renowned for his work in phlebotomy and blood plasma preservation. His research into the storage, processing and shipment of blood plasma saved the lives of hundreds of Britons during World War II. Today, his innovative blood banking process has standardized procedures for long-term blood preservation. And his storage techniques were also adopted by the American Red Cross.
