🌟 Autism Masking in Girls and Boys

Some children with autism—both girls with autism and boys with autism—learn to "mask" their challenges by copying peers, rehearsing social situations, or hiding confusion to fit in.

On the surface, they may appear to be managing well at school or in social settings. From a child development perspective, this can make it harder to recognize what is actually happening beneath the surface. In reality, many of these children are working very hard to keep up.

Masking is often connected to sensory needs and differences in emotional regulation. The effort to stay "together" during the day can lead to exhaustion, anxiety, or emotional shutdowns once they get home.

Because of this, parents are often left trying to make sense of what they are seeing at home versus what teachers report at school. Masking is one reason autism signs can be missed or misunderstood, especially in girls, but it can also happen in boys in more subtle ways.

Understanding autism masking can help parents recognize what their child may be experiencing beneath the surface, not just what is seen outwardly.
