Floridalust Friday 🌴 🏴‍☠️ The Gasparilla Pirate Fest is held in Tampa every year at the end of January - this weekend is the children's parade, next weekend is the main parade and invasion 📿 but who is this festival's namesake?

Though the pirate José Gaspar (nickname Gasparilla) is a popular figure in Florida folklore, there is no evidence that he actually existed. Legend says he terrorized the Gulf of Mexico for many years from his base in southwest Florida amassing a huge fortune that remains undiscovered, aboard his ship the Floriblanca.

The first written account of José Gaspar was from a promotional brochure in the early 1900s advertising for Henry B. Plant’s Boca Grand Hotel in Charlotte Harbor near Gasparilla Island - the author later admitted this tale was completely made up.  Subsequent retellings of the Gaspar legend are based on this story, including the accidental inclusion of José Gaspar in a 1923 book on real pirates, which has caused ongoing confusion about his historical authenticity.
