As a U.S. Coast Guard Credentialed Captain and a Florida native with 45 years on Tampa Bay, I want every boater to understand this:
⚠️ About 70–75% of recreational boating fatalities involve drowning
⚠️ Over 85% of those victims were NOT wearing a life jacket
⚠️ Many incidents happen on calm days, not storms
⚠️ Falling overboard is often sudden and silent
Most people don’t realize they’re in trouble until it’s too late.
✅ HOW THIS IS PREVENTED:
✔️ Wear a life jacket — especially while underway
✔️ Use engine cut-off lanyards on small boats
✔️ Avoid standing while running
✔️ Slow down in rough water and wakes
✔️ Know your boat and your balance limits
✔️ Keep decks dry and clutter-free
Cold water, winter conditions, fatigue, alcohol, and surprise wakes all increase the risk — especially here in Tampa Bay.
