Carla Fischer grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she was the sports editor of her high school newspaper and a coxswain on the crew team. It was at one particular regatta on Onondaga Lake where she discovered Syracuse University and its excellent communications school and quickly became enamored with all things Orange. Upon her return from the meet, Carla expressed an interest in applying to Newhouse. “We can never afford that,” she was told. But, recognizing her passion and desire, Carla’s dad followed with, “…but we’ll figure out how to make it happen.”

And happen it did. Through an amazing combination of parental sacrifice, financial aid, numerous work-study jobs, a three-year stint as an RA, and an ever-expanding merit-based assistance package, Carla made it through four years of Syracuse (and Newhouse) and graduated with much decoration. And none of it would have been possible without the generous contributions of the donors who made so much of that aid possible. Carla went on to a successful career with General Electric and in 1998 was selected as “Outstanding Young Alumni” by the University, in part because of her continued stewardship of the school and because of the many, many students she recruited and hired into GE. In a speech at the award ceremony, Carla declared publicly: “I intend to pay back every penny that others gave in order to make my SU education possible.” Then-Chancellor Kenneth Shaw asked to have that in writing before she stepped down from the podium! And now, the promise is made good. In 2010, working with the Office of Development, Carla pledged to create the Carla Fischer ’87 Endowed Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance – like that which she received – to a student like her, who otherwise may not have had the chance to attend Syracuse University. Carla runs successful practice as a Corporate Leadership consultant as her "real job," but this “hobby business” called 315 Collection has become her labor of love. The line features handmade (and not) affordable fashion accessories. As part of her endowment campaign, Carla created a special line of orange-themed products, called 315 Collection, for Syracuse Orange fans. It all happened when someone complimented her on the earrings she was wearing the night of the record-setting SU-Villanova Orange-out in the dome. “You should sell those, “ she was told. And a business (er, fundraising) idea was born. Monies from the sales of the orange items will go directly toward funding the endowment.
