Companies are trying — and failing — to run revenue with CRM + spreadsheets + BI tools.
AKA the three-headed hydra.
Why? Because none of those systems were purpose-built to run revenue.
CRM is the main culprit. CRM is a great system of record – a useful database to help manage relationships.
But when it comes to running revenue, they overpromise and under-deliver. Anyone who’s tried to run any part of the revenue process in CRM knows what I mean. You feel obligated to try their half-baked solutions, only to end up wasting months or quarters. And you’re right back at square one.
This isn’t fair to investors, retail investors, operators, employees, or customers.
And it’s not acceptable to board members. They hate it.
The first topic I’m hearing from board members – especially in today’s macro environment – is “Tell me how you run revenue. What’s your revenue governance strategy?”
Leaders who can’t answer those questions won’t be leaders for long.
Revenue is the most important business process at any company. It’s time to start treating it that way.
And make sure there’s a line item in your FY budget for a Revenue Platform. Leading companies already do, everyone else is catching up.
