Scrap Soils, a Detroit company, is exploring the possibility of using an autonomous robot to make composting food waste more environmentally friendly.

Each week, the company drives a truck around the city to collect food waste from homes and businesses, which is then taken to a local farm to be turned into compost.

The robot, provided by Santa Monica-based startup Ottonomy IO, is said to reduce carbon emissions for small-distance deliveries by nearly 40%. Scrap Soils is collecting data on the logistics, market, and benefits of the program to determine its feasibility and impact.

The company hopes that this approach will help grow its membership base and make composting more sustainable.
