This morning Gen. KICS (Keep It Clean Sumter) paid a visit to Salterstown Community Center along with Sumter County Litter Control Officers Nick Murray and Tod Sims to urge the students to Stash the Trash.
As Team Sumter continues to fight litter in Sumter County, Murray implored the students to be good stewards of the environment and make sure all trash goes into the trash can.
We’re also mindful that a key partner in our fight against litter, Palmetto Pride is kicking off a statewide initiative as June is designated as Zero Tolerance for Litter Month.
“Every piece of litter on the side of the road started with a choice,” said Sarah Lyles, Executive Director of Palmetto Pride. “Zero Tolerance for Litter Month is about reminding people that these laws exist for a reason – to protect public safety, wildlife, and the places South Carolinians take pride in.”
Murray said they’re ramping up enforcement efforts in Sumter County regarding unsecured and uncovered loads in truck beds and on trailers.
“These violations continue to create safety hazards for motorists and contribute to litter and debris issues throughout the county,” he said. “Our team will be conducting increased patrols and enforcement activities focused on load securement and proper covering requirements. We appreciate your support as we work to improve roadway safety and keep our community clean.”
Sumter County Council Chairman James T. McCain Jr. serves on the Board of Directors of Palmetto Pride.
“We’re making progress in this fight against litter, and education is a key aspect. Students are getting books and visits from our Litter Team and I’m proud to see the progress we’re making,” he said.
