Construction work on the Orangeburg and Mallard intersection improvement project is expected to begin on Tuesday, July 7. This project will begin with tree clearing throughout July and then pause for several months to allow the utilities to relocate in this construction area. Once utilities are relocated, work will resume to install two new turn lanes at the intersection on Mallard Road and the northbound side of Orangeburg Road.

This project is a developer funded project, but will be managed by the County. In 2018, County Council passed Ordinance 18-05, which hold developers responsible for addressing the impact of their developments and to ensure that improvements are completed in a timely manner. It requires new residential developments to complete traffic studies and mitigate their own impacts, on site and off site, to ensure there are adequate roads as growth occurs.

Please note that the plans for this intersection is not only two turn lanes in the future. The Orangeburg and Mallard intersection is included in the County’s Orangeburg Loop Improvements Project, which is proposed to increase the number of lanes on the roads connecting to the intersection and would then warrant a traffic signal when that project goes to construction.
