I had a really neat conversation with my kids yesterday. We used a deck of Story Cards, photos of everyday life, to pick what visually represents how I am as a father.

I selected a picture I hoped they would choose, a boy running through a sprinkler with a look of pure joy. Then I asked each of my boys to pick a card. One chose a man working with tools, and said I’m often home but am busy working on projects. The other chose a man reading in a field, and said I am always trying to get away from them to read.

We talked about how I could operate differently to close the gap between what I want to be known for and what I am known for. It was a difficult conversation, but one I’d much rather have now than after they are grown up!

This is something we can all do with any relationship to find out what it’s really like to be on the other side of us. Personally or professionally, it’s always better to ask now than to regret not knowing when we learn the hard way too late.
