When I tell you Dari and Keith turned UP for their wedding!! Previews for them were so fun to edit 😍

Eeeeek, those new business mistakes! Man, I struggled a lot when my business was young. And honestly, I’m okay with that! Looking back, though, there are three things I WISH I had avoided:
•
1. NOT USING CONTRACTS. Photographers, I promise you need a contract! Not only do they protect you legally, but they make you seem more legitimate and give your clients peace of mind. I use @honeybook for all my contracts and project workflows.
•
2. NOT ASKING FOR DEPOSITS. It only took one no-show client for me to start asking for non-refundable deposits. I drove 45 minutes in traffic, waited at the location, and finally got a text from my couple saying they couldn’t make it. 😭 At the very least, deposits should fairly compensate you for turning down other prospective clients! Not to mention gas and time spent if your client does end up cancelling at the last minute.
•
3. UNDERCHARGING. Boy, is this one close to my heart. If you’re like me and most of your clients starting out are friends and family, it can feel suuuuuper uncomfortable asking for payment. But! YOUR 👏 TIME 👏 IS 👏 VALUABLE 👏 and camera gear is expensive! Undercharging only undermines your value and will burn you out so much faster.
