On October 21, 2004, Martin Memorial Hospital dedicated the John Scott Healing Garden in honor of its longtime employee, John Scott.
In 1939, Scott took a bus from Hobe Sound after hearing about possible job opportunities at the new hospital. He found D.S. Hudson, treasurer of the Board of Directors, pulling weeds. After Scott offered to do it for him, he was hired on the spot as a gardener, at a salary of $30 a month plus one meal a day. The plaque at the garden reads "This healing garden is dedicated to John Scott in honor of his 65 years of devoted service."
