Weeks 4, 5, and 6 of the Protecting Florida's Resources Summer Best Management Practices series included presentations by UF/IFAS Extension Agents from Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach Counties and the Martin County Environmental Programs Coordinator. Programs are open to the public, including municipal and private industry professionals and Master Gardener Volunteers. Each session offered CEUs for FNGLA and licensed pesticide and fertilizer applicators. Topics covered in recent weeks were: stormwater pollution prevention, sargassum composting, managing weedy and invasive plants, and integrated pest management. The last weekend of June, mangoes took center stage. UF/IFAS Extension Palm Beach County and the South Florida Mango Growers hosted the Florida Mango Festival and Growers Summit. At the Summit, Extension Martin County shared about the Small Farms Start-up School and other resources offered by UF/IFAS County Extension offices, which are located in each of Florida's 67 counties! At the FNGLA Treasure Coast Chapter meeting on April 30th, the UF/IFAS Extension Martin County Sustainability & Commercial Horticulture Agent presented on Landscaping for Wildlife. A recent study by UF found that Floridians need more knowledge about choosing wildlife-friendly plants and asking their landscape professional about landscape maintenance practices that protect wildlife. Our thanks to Becker Tree Farm for hosting the event and providing a backdrop of native trees, and to Pinders Nursery for providing native shrubs and wildflowers for the display.
