Repost from Diane Dultmeier | Stuart, FL Family Photographer

Recently I was introducing myself to a group and found myself saying something new:

“I’m the photographer to call when you want to put your why on the wall.”

There were actually a few audible sounds from the audience, and several people commented on it afterward. I think that phrase sums up what I’ve been doing for families all these years.

When I think about the portraits I’ve created over the past 25 years in Stuart, I think about the people. I think about parents wanting to hold onto something that is passing too quickly. I think about grandparents gathering everyone together. I think about high school seniors who are leaving home and families who know life is about to change.

For most of us, our “why” isn’t an idea. It has names and faces. It’s the people we love.

That’s why my approach has never been just the portrait session and some digital files.

To start, I help families plan their sessions, next I help them choose the images they love most, and design artwork that fits their home and their lives. Then I deliver it and install it so they can enjoy it every day.

A portrait isn’t finished when the camera is put away. It’s finished when it becomes part of a family’s home.

I love to walk into a client’s house and see my portrait hanging on the wall. It makes me happy to know it became part of their family’s story. The parents see it every day. Their young kids see themselves celebrated every day. Their grown kids often see portraits as a solid foundation that’s always been there. Their grandchildren will someday see who their parents used to be.

That’s what I meant by putting your why on the wall. Does it make sense to you?

I hope you already have portraits hanging in your home that make you smile every time you walk by.

And if your people look a little different now than they did when those portraits were created, maybe it’s time to celebrate this chapter too.

Our families change so gradually that sometimes we don’t even realize it until suddenly we do.
