80 years ago today, on June 6, 1944, hundreds of thousands of multinational Allied soldiers, airmen and sailors took part in the D-Day air and amphibious assault at Normandy, France. This integrated military operation, codenamed Operation Overlord, was the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The Allied forces landed some 156,000 Allied soldiers on the beaches of Normandy by the end of the first day. Despite their success in establishing a beachhead, some 4,000 Allied troops were killed by German soldiers defending the beaches. Within a few days about 326,000 Allied troops, more than 50,000 vehicles and some 100,000 tons of equipment had landed.
Historians often refer to D-Day as the beginning of the end of World War II.
