and other key city and community agencies impacting safety, housing, and quality of life, reducing crime significantly and empowering the community. STAND has been the driver in community movements critical in the development of resident leadership roles, such as Reinvent South Stockton and the resulting Promise Zone Initiative, which were started by then Councilman and now Mayor of Stockton, Michael Tubbs. STAND has worked to improve South Stockton by repurposing blighted areas through community advocacy, turning questionable liquor stores and areas of illicit activity into planned sites for medical clinics, commerce, and other resources greatly needed by the community. STAND’s impact has been prominently featured in local media, and the agency’s efforts have earned the public’s trust across the region. STAND’s Affordable Housing Program began 20 years ago with the goal of purchasing blighted houses from indifferent slumlords and reclaiming them for the community as affordable, safe housing. This program has reclaimed 260 homes to date. In addition to these efforts, STAND operates a youth program providing youth basketball camps, academic activities,and social events - such as the Christmas holiday tree lighting that covers over 30 blocks.
