Keeping Your Furry Friends Safe This 4th of July! 🐾

— From the President of the Humane Society

Fireworks are fun for us, but for many pets, they're terrifying. Every year around the 4th, we see a massive influx of lost animals who bolted in panic during fireworks displays. More pets go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year. Here are some tips to keep your animals calm and safe:

🏠 Create a Safe Space
Set up a quiet, comfortable room away from windows. Close blinds, turn on the TV or some calming music to mask the noise. Let them hide in their favorite spot—don't force them out.

🚪 Keep Them Inside
Even if your pet is usually outdoors, bring them inside before the fireworks start. A scared pet can bolt over fences or break through screens in panic.

🆔 Update Their ID
Make sure collars have current tags and microchip info is up to date. Just in case they do escape, this gives you the best chance of a quick reunion—and saves them from ending up at our shelter.

🏃 Exercise Early
Take dogs for a long walk earlier in the day to tire them out. A tired pup is a calmer pup.

🧸 Comfort Items
Offer their favorite toys, blankets, or even a piece of your clothing. Some pets respond well to anxiety wraps or pheromone diffusers.

🙅‍♀️ Skip the Home Fireworks
Keep sparklers and fireworks away from pets—they can cause serious burns or poisoning if ingested.

💊 Talk to Your Vet
If your pet has severe anxiety, ask about calming medications or supplements before the big night.

Watch for signs of stress: panting, pacing, trembling, hiding, or destructive behavior. Stay calm yourself—your pet picks up on your energy!

Let's work together to keep our pets home where they belong this holiday. Have a safe and happy Independence Day!
