When and How to Wash Your Hands | Handwashing | CDC 11/08/2019

Hand washing is one of the best ways to protect yourself (and the people you love) from getting sick.

WHEN
• It’s important to wash your hands during these key times when you’re likely to come into contact with germs: before, during, and after you prepare food; before you eat; before and after you care for someone who is sick; after you use the bathroom; and after you blow your nose, cough, or sneeze.

HOW
1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with soap. Get the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “happy birthday” song from beginning to end 2 times.
4. Rinse your hands under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. But you can use hand sanitizer when you don’t have access to soap and water (unless your hands are visibly soiled). Just know that hand sanitizer doesn’t work on all types of germs and might not remove harmful chemicals like pesticides and heavy metals.
