grew up working on a farm for Sterling Wallentine in southern Idaho. He taught me a lot about working and being a man. He put trust in me, gave me responsibility and helped me become a man. I’ve often thanked God that I knew Sterling.

Every summer we would have a few weeks that were extra busy. We would finish up chores and sprinkler pipe on the farm & dairy then we would go to the bottoms to cut and bale the grass hay. They were long days but I remember them fondly.

One year Sterling had been driving around with a new hat on his dash board and had been wearing this old hat. I started teasing him and he gave me a hard time for not wearing a hat. He took this hat off his head and plopped it on my head while putting the new hat on.

It had been a hot day driving an open cab tractor, cooking under the son. The camaraderie and love I felt that day has stuck with me for almost 30 years.

I keep a small list of men that I want be like. There are only a handful of great men on that list. My father Howard, my grandpa Sharp, my mission president Richard Walker and a few others. Sterling is on that list.

I hope that I can be a man that is on “the list” for others. This hat is a reminder of the kind of man I want to be.
