Day 27: St. Louis Black Tech Scene

The Black Tech scene in St. Louis is lowkey popping!

As more and more tech companies are adopting a “live from anywhere” policy when it comes to remote work, a number of people have been opting out of relocating to Silicon Valley and choosing to remain in the Lou. I mean, why not? It’s relatively inexpensive (especially on a tech salary), the central time zone makes it easier to handle Zoom meetings with partners on both coasts (we’re only 1hr behind the East Coast, and 2hrs ahead of the West Coast), and there are plenty of networking opportunities to meet, and scout, a diverse range of new clients, friends, and partners from a number of different companies.

STL is home to representatives from larger global businesses like Airbnb, Meta, Twitter, Linkedin, Block, Inc. (formerly Square, Inc.), and Grubhub, as well as a number of local companies. The employees aren’t strictly engineers or coders either: we’re DEI strategists, business consultants, recruiters, creative producers, and much more. Recently, a who’s who of Black Tech folks held an in-person meet up at the City Foundry and over a dozen different companies were present. If you’re interested in tapping into the Black Tech scene in STL, I recommend checking out the BlackTech-STL group on Facebook to stay connected and join one of their Tech and Chill events.
