Interesting information about our Alma Mater
The title of oldest African American public high school building still standing is debated between two historic institutions:
Sumner High School (St. Louis, MO): Built in 1875, this building is celebrated as the oldest high school building in the United States constructed specifically for African American students. It is still an operating high school. The current structure was completed in 1910.
Peabody High School (Petersburg, VA): Established in 1870, this is historically recognized as one of the oldest public schools for Black students in the country. While the original 1870 location has moved, the historic 1900s building that housed it for decades still stands though constructed in 1920.
