🐾Don't Kitten-Nap!🐾

Spring and Summer bring warmer weather...and kitten season!🌸🐱

If you find a liter of kittens outside, your first instinct may be to rescue them. But before you scoop them up, take a moment to assess the situation. In many cases, the kittens are not orphaned at all - mom is simply out hunting or finding food and will return when it's safe.

Why is staying with mom so important?

🍼Mom's milk is the best nutrition. While kitten milk replacer can be lifesaving when needed, is cannot provide the antibodies kittens receive from their mother's milk to help protect them from illness.

🐱Mom teaches important life skills. Kittens learn social behaviors, communication, grooming, and appropriate play from their mother and littermates.

🏥Shelters aren't always the safest option for healthy outdoor kittens. Because so many animals pass through shelters, there can be higher risk of exposure to contagious diseases, especially for very young kittens with developing immune systems.

💔Separating kitten can be stressful for mom. A mother cat may spend hours searching for her missing babies.

If you discover a nest of kittens:
✅Observe from a distance
✅Keep children and pets away
✅Avoid handling or hovering over the kittens
✅Give mom time to return

A mother cat who feels threatened or watched too closely may become afraid to approach her kittens.

Today is all about celebrating the special bond we share with our feline friends. Just remember - cat hugs should always be on their terms! A slow blink, a head bump, a lap nap, or a loud purr can be just as meaningful as a cuddle.

🚨Could Your Dog Be Experiencing Bloat?🚨

Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV), often called "bloat", is a life-threatening emergency that every dog owner should know about.

GDV Occurs when the stomach fills with gas and then twists on itself. When this happens, blood flows to the stomach and other organs is cut off, sending the body into shock. Without immediate veterinary treatment, GDV can become fatal within hours.

🐕Dogs at higher risk include:
• Dogs and giant breed dogs (Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, and others)
• Deep Chested Breeds
• Dogs that eat very quickly
• Dogs with a family history of bloat

⚠️Signs of GDV include:
• Swollen or distended abdomen
• Repeated attempts to vomit with little or no production
• Excessive drooling
• Pale gums
• Restlessness or pacing
• Signs of pain or discomfort
• Rapid breathing
• Weakness or collapse

If you notice these signs, do not wait to see if your pet improves. GDV is a true emergency emergency, and every minute matters.

While not all cases can be prevented, feeding multiple smaller meals per day, slowing down fast eaters, and discussing preventive gastropexy surgery for high-risk breeds with your veterinarian may help reduce the risk.
